The Drakensberg Grand Traverse is a little over 200 km of high Drakensberg with a total ascent of roughly 8500 m. Most of the route is above 3000 m with very little formal trail. Ryno Griesel and Ryan Sandes set the non stop speed record at 41 hours and 49 minutes.
We have split the route down to 7 missions. Each mission will include an up and a down portion. Each mission will link up so that the entire DGT route is covered. Each mission will be completed in one single 24 hour period starting early on Saturday morning. We will be staying in comfortable accommodation on both Friday and Saturday nights. We will not be sleeping on the mountain and we will have hot showers , warm food and warm beds each night. These are fast packing point to point missions. You carry only the essential gear with you. Your ‘comfy’ kit will be transported from the start to the Saturday overnight stop by us.
These are guided trips with at least 3 guides per trip which will allow us to split the group into 3 a ‘Fast’, ‘Medium’ and ‘Easy’ paced group.
Vehicles will be left at a safe place and you will be transported from there to the start and returned to them at the end of the mission on Sunday.
These missions are extreme. You have got to be fit and strong to manage. Athletes who are not Mindful Runners must submit a running CV detailing there fitness levels. See here for detail required.
Sunday sports massage will be arranged if there is enough interest. Massage must be pre-booked and paid separately.
We have not finalised costing yet but a rough estimate for each mission is R 2900 per person sharing including accommodation, guiding, transport of kit from start to finish, transport from finish back to cars. Mindful Runners will receive a discount of 25% off the full price.
Accommodation will be comfortable with actual beds , hot showers and a roof.
Food is currently excluded although we can include a catered option if there is an interest.
We are limiting numbers to 15 per mission you will be booked on a first come first served basis.
Each person will also receive a DGT Logbook with a separate entry for each mission which will be stamped on completion of that mission. We will be running the missions for years to come and you don’t have to complete them all in one year. We are working on a finishers memento for everybody who completes all 7.
